Flight Operations Continue As Sector Suspends Strike Action
Domestic and international flight operations would continue on Tuesday, November 6, as labour unions in collaboration with the Nigria Labour Congress (NLC) have suspended the strike planned to start today.
It would be recalled that the National Chairman of the NLC, Ayuba Wabba, announced the suspension after the meeting of the tripartite committee set up by the Federal Government to come up with new minimum wage for workers, during the evening hours of Monday, November 5.
According to reports; “The planned nationwide strike by the labour unions over a new minimum wage has been shelved for now. The strike was scheduled to start on Tuesday.”
“Labour leaders, government representatives and organised private sector spent many hours on Monday to reach a consensus on a minimum wage.”
“But it was in vain as the Tripartite committee decided to convey the resolution of the meeting to President Muhammadu Buhari, for onward transmission to the National Assembly.”
The report will be submitted to President Buhari on Tuesday by 4:15 pm.
The labour leader said the decision to suspend the action was reached after agreements were reached and documents signed.
The reason for the strike was the disagreement on the increment of minimum wage requested by Nigeria worker as “Government wants to pay N24,000 as minimum wage, but the labour leaders are insisting on N30,000”.
The major unions in the aviation industry have earlier agreed to halt all services to the air transport sector in solidarity to the struggle by the NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).
In an earlier “Notice of Strike Action” signed by the aviation unions Air Transport Services Senior Staff Association, ATSSSAN; National Union of Air Transport Employees, NUATE; National Association of Aircraft Pilots and Engineers, NAAPE and Association of Nigeria Aviation Professionals, ANAP stated that “In complying with the directive of the labour centres, therefore, we issue this notice to all workers in the aviation sector to withdraw all services from 00:00hrs of November 6, 2018”.
